What blocks a kitchen sink
A sink clogs gradually: grease and food settle in the pipe in layers. Here is what we find most often.
- Grease and oilCool in the pipe and settle on the walls in layers.
- Food scraps, grains, riceSwell in water and collect into a plug.
- Coffee grounds and tea leavesHeavy — they settle on the bottom of the pipe and don’t wash away.

What you can do yourself — and when to stop
If the blockage is fresh and water still drains, even slowly, you can often deal with it yourself. Here is what is safe — and where it is better to stop.
You can
- Take the trap apart over a bucketPut a bucket under it, undo the trap nuts by hand, empty and rinse it, then put it back.
- Use a plungerCover the second bowl and the overflow with a wet cloth so the pressure goes into the pipe, and make 10–15 sharp pulls.
- Hot water with dish soapHot but not boiling: it softens fresh grease. Wait 15–20 minutes and pour again.
Don’t
- Pour boiling water into plastic pipesPlastic softens and the joints start to leak.
- Pour chemicals into standing waterThey don’t reach the blockage, and the technician then has to work in a caustic solution.
- Flush grease down “with hot water”Further down the water cools and the grease sets where it is harder to reach.
When to stop: the trap is clean but the water still stands — the blockage is in the pipe, and only a cable will clear it.

Why does the sink keep clogging?
Grease settles on the pipe walls in layers, and each new plug catches on the old coating. Put grease and food scraps in the bin, and once a week flush the pipe with hot water and dish soap.
Can I pour boiling water into the sink?
Not into plastic pipes: the plastic softens and the joints start to leak. Hot tap water is safe.
Will chemicals help?
Not in standing water: the solution doesn’t reach the blockage. We don’t use chemicals — we clear it mechanically, with a cable.
